Wow just got back from pax, and it was everything that I had hoped it to be. Met some awesome people, played some great games soon to be on the market. But what my primary reason for going was not really for playing games, that was more of a tertiary reason. My primary reason for going was to mainly see how I can get underway into making my own game.
See I’ve been playing video games since I was kid. I had the luxury of playing tons of video games from all systems, you name it. And I have to say that having that experience has killed a lot of my love for casual gaming. It’s because I’m so much into the aesthetic elements of everything. Especially after going to college and experiencing the professional creative field first hand, I can pretty much do anything in this field that requires graphic involvement.
Once you see how the magic is done, in a sense it kills the ‘magic’ element. So to be frank; a lot of games these days to me are overly convoluted in terms of game play experience. The industry to me seems like a lot of rinse, wash, and repeat. But to be fair that’s not true for all games. I got to talk to a handful of gaming companies, and it would seem like the creative teams get a lot of ‘pull’ to what they want to do. There is a lot of give and take in the logistics, but I was surprised to hear that game ideas, and what go into a game work a lot like how artists like myself approach an illustration.
You have a plan at first as to what your going to do, you know what elements you want, but along the way you might have an aha moment like “this is pretty cool, why don’t we try this, and that”. But anyways I’m getting off topic to what I really want to talk about which is that I would like to make a game. I was heavily inspired by Ska Studios programmer AND animator James Silva & Fancy Pants Adventure creator Brad Bourne. And also Nathan Vella co-founder & president of capybaragames.
It’s possible to make your own games, if you have the idea, passion, and motivation. So all I’m going to say for right now is that I’m so taking the plunge, and learning C sharp, it’s something that I gotta do to complete my soul.
